Flat Rate: The Scourge of the Auto Industry
"Flat Rate" is a system which pays auto technicians by the job; not by the hour. All dealers and the vast majority of independent repair shops are flat rate shops. Under flat rate when a job pays 5 hours, whether the tech knocks it out in 3 hours or thoroughly completes it in 6 hours, he will receive 5 hours pay. Each time the tech chooses to take a few extra minutes to do the job better, it reduces his next paycheck. But, if he cuts corners, his next paycheck just gets bigger. This system rewards the shady worker and penalizes the honest one. It is the underlying cause of this industry's deservedly poor reputation. It is why the industry attracts so few quality people, and why so many of those leave. Not only do employers use the system to reap huge profits, they also greatly reduce losses when business is slow by guaranteeing the techs as few as 20 hours pay for a full week at work. Each and every day, the technician must choose to bend his principles or "go hungry".
We have always paid our technicians a straight hourly wage. This gives them an assured steady income while allowing them to give the customer their best work. Yes, paying our Master Mechanics an honest wage costs more; but our primary goal is providing you the best Mercedes service possible. If you want to find out how much a repair shop really cares about you (and their employees) ask them if they pay their techs "Flat Rate".

Saving $$$
Preventive maintenance on your Mercedes gives both significant savings and greater reliability.
A recent J.D. Powers study found the average savings from following recommended services to be 45% over the life of the modern vehicle.
This from MSN money:
You have heard the saying "penny-wise, pound-foolish"? This old English phrase means scrimping on a small expense often leads to a much bigger one. That's exactly what will happen if you wait too long to change your oil, swap your filters or investigate that weird grinding noise. If you have a vehicle, you should invest some effort in finding a good reliable mechanic - yes they do exist - then make sure your budget includes money for regular maintenance and repairs.
